**DENVER, Colo. (Nov. 15, 2012)** — Optis, a leading provider of people data services and cloud software solutions, released a survey today revealing that 54% of HR professionals are unsure of how much absence costs their organization.
“In this economic environment, it’s imperative that organizations understand how much of the $100 billion nationwide absence problem resides within their workforce,” said Optis President Archie Anderson. “Without a clear understanding of their workforce’s absence utilization and costs, employers are experiencing negative productivity issues that can impact the bottom line.”
The survey polled HR professionals at the SHRM Annual Conference & Exhibition in June 2012. It asked employers how information about leave laws, such as federal and state FMLA, is obtained and distributed, how absent employees are covered, and how organizations are administering their leave management processes.
The study also uncovers that compliance is a top concern for the majority of HR professionals. “This isn’t a surprising result,” said Anderson. “This mirrors other surveys and legal actions taken due to improperly managed protected leaves that we are seeing in the news every day. Employers need to be certain that their HR department is equipped to manage protected leaves to reduce their compliance risk and administer leaves fairly for their employees.”
